The March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health, presented Romero with the award for finding a link between genetics and preterm births.
The research shows some mothers and fetus may have genes that make them more likely to have inflammations, and infections. Romero said one of three premature births is related to these factors.
He said, studies show treating infections during pregnancy do not prevent preterm labor.
Future research will include replicating and sequencing receptor genes, IL-6 and II-6.
The award was presented in Chicago at “The Pregnancy Meeting” by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, a nonprofit group of obstetricians and gynecologists.
