Athletic banquet honors successful student-athletes

Wayne State University’s St. Andrews Hall was full of sportsmanship and positive energy last Thursday. The WSU Athletic Department hosted a Student Athlete Academic Recognition Banquet for all athletes who worked hard during their regular season and achieved good term grade point average.

      Wayne State President Jay Noren addressed the athletes with words of support and prudence.

He said that WSU athletes are among the best in their community service efforts and that he is proud of what they have accomplished. He added that WSU athletes are not far behind with their athletic achievement.

      Besides Noren, several deans came to support and acknowledge the athletes’ success.

     WSU football player and a senior, Bruno Shkreli welcomed everyone in the room and was saluted and honored in the opening ceremony for his last time as a WSU athlete.

      The director of WSU Athletic Department, Rob Fournier, also addressed the student athletes, expressing how pleased he is of the student’s grades and their achievements.

      “The school and education that we created on that side of the Lodge is a life school, and whoever succeed to go through it will go far in life,” Fournier said.

      Several WSU athletes received awards for their work. They were better among the best, and each college awarded them with recognition for their hard work.

Those athletes are Michael Brichacek, men’s fencing team, for the College of Liberal Arts and Science; Brady Cooper, men’s baseball, for the College of Education; Lindsay DiPietro, women’s hockey, for School of Business Administration; Marcie Hill, women’s volleyball, for School of Social Work; Meghan Luzod, women’s tennis, for the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts; Ashley St Andrew, women’s swimming, for the College of Pharmacy and Health Science; Samantha Strassburg, women’s fencing, for the College of Nursing; and Phil Swanson, men’s  baseball, for the College of Engineering.
