Wayne State ended its hockey season March 4 against the Robert Morris Colonials at the CHA quarterfinals in a final score of 1-3.
Sophomore Alyssa Baldin was the sole goal scorer for Wayne State, who finished the season with a total of 20 points. All three Robert Morris goals scored in the first period eventually led the Colonials to the CHA semifinals.
Despite all of the scoreless first periods that Wayne State has encountered this season (17), the first period at the CHA quarterfinal is what cost the Warriors the game.
“I think that first period we got down and for whatever reason we played scared,” head coach Jim Fetter said. “It’s unfortunate because we’re so much better than what we showed today, but you got to give them (the Colonials) credit. They stuck to their game plan and the better team won today.”
Freshman Julie Hebert described her team’s misfortune as a domino effect.
“I think we might have just had a team break down,” Hebert said. “Not everyone showed up to play and it just had an effect on our team because when one person doesn’t come, I guess the rest of the team just ... went down.”
Fetter said the main thing his team needs to work on for next season is to toughen up mentally and physically.
“It’s something that we’ll adjust with them,” he said. “Hopefully they can work on it in the offseason and be ready again next September.”
CHA Championship
The Mercyhurst Lakers successfully defended their CHA championship title March 6, as they beat the Syracuse Orange 3-1 at the City Sports Center arena in Detroit. The Lakers have won the CHA championship tournament every year since 2002-03.
