Jennifer Bradford, junior, closed out an undefeated month of March.

The Wayne State women’s tennis team prevailed in its final home match of the season March 30 against Niagara University 7-2.

With three victories in doubles and four in singles, The Warriors won their sixth in as many matches bumping their overall record to 14-5.

Two of three doubles matches were won with ease as No. 1 pair Sharon Gill and Kristina Goranskaya blanked Hilary Hansen and Alyssa Lucas 8-0. Jennifer Bradford and Debora Correa beat their opponents 8-1.

McCall Monte and Milena Vuksanovic, however, just edged Niagara’s Raquel Sollis and Brittany Walters in a very close 8-6 match.

“My partner and I struggled to keep our intensity up and stay focused throughout the match,” Monte said. “At the end we pulled it together and tried to keep our unforced errors down.”

Among singles wins were junoirs Gill, Goranskaya and Monte, and sophomore Medha Jha. Goranskaya beat Sollis 6-0, 6-3 while Monte beat opponent Emma Cunnington 4-6, 6-1, 10-4.

Gill is now tied with Wayne State’s all-time leader in singles wins, Dee Mays (62), after defeating Hansen in a tight singles match that was forced into a third set (6-0, 3-6, 6-2).
Despite the wins, No. 3 Vuksanovic was defeated 6-7, 7-5, 14-12 as well as No. 5 Correa, who also lost her singles match against Walters in two sets 7-6, 7-6.

The team has set high expectations to continue its six-game winning streak.

Sophomore Jha, who won her first singles match of the season 6-2, 6-3, looks forward to an undefeated spring season.

“It was nice,” Jha said of her win. “I’m pretty excited about the final game, and I hope we will accomplish what we’ve been working for all year.”

Monte believes that with a boost of confidence, the team should close out the season the way it started on a positive note.

“We just can’t let our guard down,” she said. “We need to stay focused and just play our game.”
