What happened
Wayne State bounced back from last week’s loss and picked up a 27-23 victory Sept. 12 against the Indianapolis Greyhounds.
Power outage
Two minutes into the game, the scoreboard lost power. Later, the stadium lights went out. At the end of the first half both teams’ coaches and athletic directors met at the 50-yard line to discuss the outage, which resulted in halftime being cut down to 12 minutes from the originally planned 25-minute break. If the power wasn’t restored, there was a potential for the game to end after three quarters.
Coincidence?
Just like the power at Key Stadium that failed two minutes into the game, the WSU offense was temporarily out of service.
But after a 53-yard touchdown pass from Zack George to Troy Burrell, a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Josh Renel and a career-long field goal from Anthony Morasso, Wayne State scored enough points to pick up its first GLIAC victory of the season.
“We threatened them with the idea that this game could end anytime now, and that’s when they got their focus,” Winters said.
A lot … and nothing
Indianapolis racked up 314 passing yards, but Wayne State didn’t allow any touchdowns through the air.
“We didn’t take advantage of the plays we could have made with some interceptions,” defensive coordinator John Hauser said. “I think our guys fought. They gave up some passes — obviously they threw a ton. I’m just pleased that we won.”
Defensive stop
Wayne State’s defense held out as Indianapolis tried to mount one final comeback. Jeremy Jones intercepted Rob Doyle’s final pass to finish off the victory.
