Celebrating senior day, the Wayne State played Ashland Nov. 1 in their last home conference game of the season.
The Warriors came back to Michigan after playing in inter-conference games where they won against a team ranked No. 17 in the nation.
“The GLAIC annihilated the other conference,” said senior Mayssa Bazzi.
Junior Meg Leone said she “looked forward to the tournament all season.”
On Oct. 31, the Warriors easily dispatched the Tiffin Dragons in a game that took only 61 minutes to play.
Wayne State won the first set 25-12 against the Eagles, but the Eagles fought hard through the first set and then the second set until the Warriors took them out, 25-11.
The Eagles played hard in the third set, tying the score at 7. They took the next point after a heated exchange between the teams.
The Warriors did not take the Eagles lightly, and they quickly came back with two points.
The two teams fought hard against each other until Ashland brought the third set to a 19-17 lead. The Warriors took a time out and came back strong, taking the next two points and tying the set.
Within minutes, the score was at 25-24 with the Warriors trailing. The Warriors took their chance and tied the score at 25-25. The team took the next two points to win the game, 27-25.
The Warriors will play Findlay Nov. 7 in Ohio at 7 p.m.
They’ll play Hillsdale Nov. 8 before heading to the GLIAC quater finals.
“It’ll be our mental toughness and focus that will determine the outcome of the games,” Bazzi said. “Practices are shorter to keep us fresh, but it’s more focused.”
Phil Nickel said the coaching staff will begin adjusting things to get the team prepared and mentally ready.
