After recording her 63rd career victory in singles play, Sharon Gill now owns the Wayne State record for most victories in women’s tennis.

The Wayne State women’s tennis team closed out the spring season perfectly beating Valparasio University 6-1 in Valparaiso, Ind. April 5 and won their seventh consecutive game.

Junior Sharon Gill set a new school record for singles wins as she tallied her 63rd win, surpassing Dee Mays’ 62 wins. She has won eight consecutive matches and accomplished her initial goal before the start of the season was to break the record.

“I feel so proud and so accomplished for all the work that I have done,” Gill said. “My plan for the next year is to try and be undefeated.”

Gill went on to share her thoughts about the team’s spring season as a whole.

“As for the season, we didn’t lose to anyone, which is really good as a team,” she added.
The Warriors won the first two of three doubles matches, with No. 1 pair Gill and Kristina Goranskaya defeating opponents Abby Wright and Brittany O’Reilly 8-1. Gill and Goranskaya finished the season with a 6-0 record.

McCall Monte and her partner Milena Vuksanovic won their match in a close 8-4. However, the only doubles loss came when the No. 3 pair of Debora Correa and Medha Jha was defeated 8-1.

“It was definitely a tough loss,” Correa said. “But you win some you lose some.”
In singles, the Warriors won five of the six matches to assert a final win. No. 4 Vuksanovic, who beat Valparasio’s Katie Bilyeu 6-4, 6-2, was pleased with her team’s spring season performance.

“I was very happy with our accomplishments.” Vuksanovic said. “We began the season with a goal to win every game, and that’s exactly what we did.”

Goranskaya, who was among the winners in singles play, accumulated her 17th win when she defeated Brittany O’Reilly after two sets 6-2, 6-1. Jha also celebrated her second singles win of the season after earning her team the final point 6-1, 6-1.

Although the regular season may be over, anticipation still awaits the Warriors if they are selected to take part in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship in May. In order to be eligible for the tournament, the Warriors must be of the top eight teams in the region.
