DETROIT -- After the dust settled on Adams Field Saturday afternoon, the Wayne State offense put up 46 points to beat the defense, which scored 26 in the annual spring scrimmage. Players could not ask for a better day with sunny skies and temperatures hovering around 65 degrees at game time. Players got a chance to suit up and play full contact against each other.
“It was a good scrimmage,” coach Paul Winters said. “A lot of fun I think the players had fun, it was a nice atmosphere and good crowd.”
More than 300 spectators showed up on the beautiful day, mostly comprised of family members to cheer their players on. The spring game gives players and coaches an opportunity to see their strengths and weaknesses on offense and defense.
“We got some things going offensively and we would have like to play better defensively, but overall I think it was a lot of fun,” Winters said.
“We made a lot of big plays, we ran the ball well, we threw the ball consistently, but the biggest disappointments on offense were the off-sides penalties.”
Last year, Daryl Graham was a consistent backup to Joique Bell in the backfield for the Warriors. With the loss of Graham, players will to step up to fill the void. Running back Neil Mitchell showed that he might be the one to fill that spot. Mitchell had a solid game, rushing for 20 yards on three attempts.
“I have been here for three years now and following Joique is a big step and I really wanted to come out here and get a name for myself,” Mitchell said. “I want people to lookout and say Bell and Mitchell are a dynamic duo.”
Another player who looked good for the defense was linebacker Raleigh Ross, who showed no signs of offseason rust. Ross stuffed quarter back Zack George on one play, and consistently got into the backfield often throughout the game.
“I’m feeling good we have to keep working and get ready for the season,” Ross said. “We will continue to workout and we will be good.”
Sophomore receiver Donald Brown has not missed a beat in the spring workouts and showed that he has solid hands and can reach out and really pull the ball in. Brown picked up some quality yards for quarterback Mick Mohner.
“I feel good and energized I was really focused on helping the team out; it was a nice day outside and my family was here, so I wanted to put on a good show,” Brown said.
Next for the Warriors: back to the weight room. The team will focus on strength and conditioning over the next few months and prepare for Saginaw Valley State, their first opponent on Sept. 5.
Injury Report
Linebacker Andrew Hall, defensive end Daunte Akra, tackle Ryan Moulding, and receiver Travis Campbell did not play in the game. Quarterback Kevin Smith has been cleared by doctors to return after his off-court injury, but did not play in the game.
