Golf opens GLIAC Championship Saturday

Wayne State women’s hockey lost its season opener at Rensselaer, 3-2, Friday night. 

Gina Buquet and Julie Hébert scored unassisted goals for WSU, but it wasn’t enough to overcome three Rensselaer second-period goals. All three markers were scored on special teams (two power play and one shorthanded goal).

Rensselaer held a distinct advantage in shots on goal (35-25) and faceoffs (38-21).
Lindsey Park made 32 saves for Wayne State (0-1) and Sonja Van Der Bliek made 23 for Rensselaer.

The two teams play again Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Volleyball: WSU defeated Lake Superior State, 3-0, in Sault Ste. Marie Friday night.

The Warriors won 25-21, 25-19, 25-26.

Cydney Biessel had 33 assists and Candis Jenich had 12 kills. WSU outblocked the Lakers, 12-3.

Wayne State is 14-2 (6-2 GLIAC) and heads to Saginaw Valley State for a Saturday matchup.

Men’s cross country: Wayne State won the 36th Annual Brooks Paul Short Run at Lehigh.

The victory was the second of the season for WSU.

Pat Webster (25:29) led Wayne State with his 16th-place finish and Kevin deBear finished 25th (25:42).

Ricky Flynn (24:43) of Lynchburg won the race.

Women’s cross country: WSU finished in a tie-for-18 th at the 36 th Annual Brooks Paul Short Run (6K) at Lehigh.

Kristi Werner (16th, 22:04) was the top finisher for Wayne State. Lauren Kessler (44th, 22:46) and Annie Magin (80th, 23:20) finished second and third on WSU, respectively.

Tina Yi (21:05) of Edinboro won the race. Kutztown won the event.

Men's golf: Wayne State will open the GLIAC Championship tomorrow at Greywalls Golf Club in Marquette.

WSU is coming off a victory at the first Great Lakes Regional and a second-place finish at the Ferris State Invitational.
