Whether it’s bad luck or a poor night’s sleep, the Warriors remain unable to win both games in a series, as they split a pair against the Colgate Raiders on Oct. 24 and 25 in Detroit.

Though the Warriors ended the series on a disappointing note with a 3-2 loss, senior forward Sam Poyton came out of the weekend with not only her first goal of the season, but her fourth career hat trick and four goals overall.

The Warriors defeated the Raiders 6-2 in the first game of the series, in which Poyton netted her hat trick and defenseman Natalie Payne notched three assists, giving her eight points early in the season. Freshman forwards Alyssa Baldin and Veronique Laramee-Paquette also contributed, scoring a goal each.

After thoroughly pounding the Raiders on Friday night, Wayne State should have been able to put  Colgate down easily on Saturday afternoon, but that was not the case.

“We didn’t react quickly enough,” head coach Jim Fetter said. “We kind of hesitated, and I think that’s where we got caught.”

Colgate held a two-goal lead over WSU through much of the second game of the series, and even a last-minute goal by Laramee-Paquette couldn’t save the Warriors from the 3-2 loss.

As far as mistakes made, the team simply didn’t have the effort, according to Fetter and captain Lindsay DiPietro.

“It’s the little things – not making tape-to-tape passes and not getting to the net like we wanted to,” said DiPietro on her team’s performance in the second game.

Goaltender Lindsey Park played in both games of the series, stopping 28 shots in the first game and 21 shots in game two.

“She definitely gave us an opportunity to win, and that’s all you can ask of your goaltender,” Fetter said about Park’s performance.

The Warriors are now six games into their schedule, which is almost one-quarter of the way through the regular season.

“We’re going through some bumps, and we expected that this year with 11 new players in our program. Hopefully, we can iron them out early in the season and get on a roll,” Fetter said.

The Warriors hit the road Nov. 7 and 8 to face Vermont.
