Women’s Hockey
In the first road series for the women’s hockey squad, Wayne State bombarded Union College’s goaltender Lundy Day with 113 shots in a two-game road series, which ended with a win and a tie.
The Warriors tied Union, 1-1, in the opener of the series. Right wing Melissa Boal scored the lone goal for WSU in the third period.
Junior goaltender Lindsey Park stopped 16 shots in her second consecutive start.
Wayne State was held scoreless throughout the first half of the Oct. 17 game, continuing a trend that occurred in their last two games.
“The puck just wasn’t bouncing our way,” said head coach Fetter. “I think we hit the post probably six times.”
In the second game of the series, freshman center Alyssa Baldin netted two goals, including the game-winning goal for Wayne State in a 6-2 victory. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.
WSU defenseman Natalie Payne also scored her first goal as a Warrior in the same game. Payne transferred to Wayne State from rival Mercyhurst College for her senior year.
Freshman goaltender Delayne Brian made 15 saves in her second start in net.
“Without a doubt they’re starting to relax a little bit more and just go out and play the game,” said Fetter, who explained that many of the freshmen players were nervous at the start of the season.
Wayne State was 3-for-8 on power play in the finale, and 3-for-17 in the series.
The Warriors return to action Oct. 24 and 25 when they host Colgate University at City Sports Arena.

Wayne State capped the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Drury.
Mayssa Bazzi was named to the All-Tournament Team. Bazzi had 54 digs and a .926 serve reception percentage.
