Cross country set for GLIAC Championship meet

Women’s tennis
Wayne State split a pair of matches on the west side of the state on Oct. 10 and 11, first shutting out Ferris State 9-0 before falling at the hands of Grand Valley State, 7-2.
Sharon Gill improved to 7-2 in singles action against the Bulldogs and Jennifer Bradford and Kristina Goranskaya extended their winning streaks to five matches apiece.


Against GVSU, Gill won her No. 1 singles match again, this time defeating Audrey Koopsen 6-1, 6-3. Deby Correa and Goranskaya won their No.2 doubles match, 8-5.

Wayne State is now 6-4 (4-4 GLIAC) and will host Findlay in its final conference showdown of the season Oct. 15. The GLIAC Tournament begins on Oct. 25.

Volleyball
The Warriors played a pair of matches in the Upper Peninsula on Oct. 10 and 11, falling to Michigan Tech 3-2 on Friday before being swept by Northern Michigan on Saturday.


After trailing 2-0 to MTU, Wayne State won the next two sets to force a decisive fifth set.

The Huskies took the set, 15-7. Sarha Gosselin led WSU with 17 kills and 12 digs.

The losing streak continued against NMU, as WSU was swept in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20. Candis Jenich chipped in with eight kills and five digs.

Wayne State falls to 10-9 (5-6 GLIAC), but is still tied for first place in the South Division with Hillsdale and Northwood.

The Warriors will head to Indianapolis on Oct. 17 and 18 for the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament.

Cross Country
The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Michigan Intercollegiate at Kensington Metropark on Oct. 10.


Abdullah Saleh finished with a first-place time of 25:40 and Dan Kapadia came in fifth place with a time of 25:55.

Their efforts, in conjunction with the rest of the team, led WSU to a third place finish in the event.

The women finished sixth in their half of the event and did so without the services of Rachelle Malette.

Lauren Kessler was the first WSU runner to finish. She placed 13th with a time of 19:21.
Both teams will run in the GLIAC Championship meet in Sault St. Marie, Mich., on Oct. 25.
