Wayne State women's hockey began its season by splitting a two-game series against Bemidji State October 3 and 4 at City Sports Center.
Wayne State right wing Melissa Boal tallied three goals in the series, scoring the game-winning overtime goal in a 2-1 victory Oct. 3.
It was her sixth career short-handed goal.
"Thank God she's on our side," WSU coach Jim Fetter said about Boal.
Wayne State lost its season opener Oct. 3, 3-2 against Bemidji State. The Warriors remained scoreless through two periods, but they rallied into the third to score two goals against BSU.
WSU carried that third-period momentum into the series finale in Saturday's overtime win.
"I think we had a slow start, but we built confidence as the game went on," Fetter said.
Wayne State was 1-for-17 on the power play during the weekend and was held scoreless through the first half of both games.
"It wasn't pretty, but we got it done," Boal said of the second game.
WSU freshman goaltender Delayne Brian started the opener for her team, stopping 22 of 25 shots and junior Lindsey Park started the second game and stopped 27 shots for her team, making several key saves.
Wayne State's three goaltenders will continue to battle it out for the starting spot.
"It's great because it makes our team better," Fetter said of the goaltending situation. "It's bad because now I have to make decisions. But I like those decisions. My staff and I, we want them to make it tough on us."
The Warriors will have next weekend off, with their next series coming Oct. 17 and 18 in Schenectady, N.Y., against Union.
