Record score not enough; WSU golf takes 3rd at GLIAC Championship

Though Steve Cuzzort and Joe Juszczyk finished one-two individually, it wasn't enough for the Wayne State golf team, as they finished third at the GLIAC Championship on Monday.

WSU shot a two-over 866 (a school record), finishing two shots behind second-place Findlay and three shots behind champion Grand Valley State.

"If we had that score I would have expected we would have won by 15 shots," coach Mike Horn said. "We had an 866 and I would have bet my entire life that we would have won with an 866."

Wayne State was one shot behind leader Saginaw Valley State after the second of two rounds, but both GVSU and Findlay jumped the Warriors on the final day for the top two spots.

Cuzzort became the third WSU golfer to win the GLIAC Championship. He shot an eight-under-par 208 (67-70-71), breaking the 54-hole school record by five shots.

"I really wanted to win that team title," Cuzzort said, "but winning the individual title is nice."

Juszczyk birdied five of the last eight holes, jumping all the way up into a two-way tie for second place.

"I'm pretty happy about it," Juszczyk said. "I tried to give the team a chance coming down the stretch."

Juszczyk (71-74-67) also broke the 54-hole school record, which was previously held by himself and Joe Spatafore).

David Anderson shot a 222 (75-72-75), good for 20th, and Michael Wouters tied 25th with a 223 (71-76-76). Chad Johnson finished 37th.

Wayne State finished in the top three for the first time since they won the GLIAC Championship in 2003.
