This past week, many students at Wayne State and across the nation took part in an historical event. Yes, I am talking about the election. But as I stood at the booth to cast my vote for our next president, I stopped to reflect on how I got to this point.
Walking to classes this semester, or any time for that matter, there was no way you could miss the petitioners outside, trying to get students to register to vote. No matter what time of day, even if it was raining or low temperatures, these people would stand out there to get students involved in their futures.
Usually, I walked past them without paying attention to what they were saying. This time, however, they were working extra hard because they knew this election would go down in history.
I can admit that I am 21 years old and I had never voted before this election. I never really took an interest in the matter. I was one of those college students you would hear about that didn’t bother to take the time to register, let alone vote. Then, I would complain about the sorry state of politics.
This time when I walked past those petitioners, they encouraged me to get out there and let my voice be heard and I wanted to be a part of history.
I never saw so many college students from so many diverse backgrounds come together for a political cause. Walking on Wayne State’s campus, I witnessed so many students trying to get involved. I don’t think I ever had so many discussions with my peers about an election.
The energy and atmosphere around campus gradually took on a whole different vibe. Every day leading up to the election was like an adrenaline rush.
I saw students walking around campaigning or just discussing among themselves the issues that would come up in the debates, even the proposals.
The energy I witnessed made November 2008 the first time that I exercised my right to vote, as well as the first time for many other students. So many people from very different walks of life came together for a cause that day, and because we did, we were a part of history.
