Did Sen. John McCain miss his time? In the year 2000, McCain sought to be president of the United States of America. McCain met a lot of criticism for his views; often siding against his own party on certain initiatives and plans that he didn’t agree with.
McCain had the experience, the age, and the ability to reach across party lines and bring fellow Democrats and Republicans together. McCain, likely the only Republican candidate in 2000 who could really challenged George W. Bush for the nomination, was derailed by the Karl Rove tactics of fear and smear.
Remember, if you will, the alleged story of how McCain’s adopted minority children were somehow his kids from an adulterous affair. This sent shockwaves through the Republican Party, because they are considered the moral right and they couldn’t have a candidate representing their party who engaged in adulterous affairs.
McCain has blasted the Christian Coalition on several occasions, and they definitely weren’t going to endorse him. McCain found himself standing at crossroads. His party had frowned on him, and the question became “Who could really win against Democratic nominee Al Gore?” The leaders of the party convinced McCain that in the best interest of the party he needed to bow out to Bush and throw full support behind him as the nominee.
Now eight years later, at age 72, McCain finally had his party’s nomination, and failed to win the presidency. No one can question McCain’s patriotism and leadership qualities. The fact is that McCain is a fine man. He has fought for this country, and almost lost his life on more than one occasion for our freedom. His campaign slogan “Country First” has been his life.
Both McCain and Barack Obama would make great presidents; that my friend isn’t the question. The question McCain must ask himself is "did I miss my time?" How does this senator re-group and accept reality that time has all but run out on his dream of being president?
Still McCain had a storied political career and is a living example of bi-partisanship. How does he convince himself that it’s over? Did he miss his time?
