I’m a freshman living on campus in Atchinson Hall. When I first moved on campus, I weighed in at 110 pounds.
I’ve been living on campus for only a little over two months and I now weigh 116 pounds. I may have needed the extra six pounds, but what if I gain another six pounds in the next two months?
You know what I’m thinking — the freshman 15 theory might be true after all.
It’s no wonder why students living on campus gain weight in their first year. Nobody eats right.
You wake up way too late to have breakfast. Sometimes you skip lunch because you have class. You munch on random snacks during the day — hot Cheetos, Snickers, Ramen noodles, etc.
When you do go to lunch, you usually eat at the Towers … and the first place you head over to is the hamburger and french fries section, which is just screaming out high cholesterol.
By the time dinner rolls around, you really don’t feel like eating. But later on, around 10 p.m., your stomach starts growling. So you march yourself over to the Warrior Grille under Ghafari Hall.
You stock up on oily chicken tenders, french fries, and a Pepsi. Great combination by the way.
Since you never go to sleep, you find yourself hungry again a little after midnight. What to eat, what to eat? Back to random munching – hot Cheetos, Snickers, Ramen noodles, etc.
No wonder no one stays on campus on the weekends. By the time they get done eating all this rubbish, their stomachs are begging for a home-cooked meal.
If I told you I knew a way to avoid eating all the rubbish, I would be lying. Frankly, I have no idea. I eat it too…
But where there’s a will, there’s a way. Instead of consuming the fatty hamburgers and greasy french fries, try a salad. It doesn’t have to be bland. There’s plenty of toppings to go along — ham, cheese, carrots, cucumber, croutons (my favorite), etc.
Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean eating boring. There’s all kinds of ways to spice up your munch life.
Watch the food channel or read recipes. You’ll find that eating healthy is energizing and fun too.
