First-year med student Karan Singh received an $8,000 grant from the American Society of Nephrology to study the link between maternal diet during pregnancy and its relation to the development of complications in kidney donors.

“When I first found out that I had received the grant, I was ecstatic,” Singh said. “My family was very proud of me.”

After working under Drs. Noreen Rossi and Robert Augustyniak, as a Nephrology research assistant, Singh was prepared to apply what he learned into something of his own interest.

“We are absolutely delighted that Karan Singh has secured this award,” said Robert Mentzer, dean of the School of Medicine. “By receiving this award, it is a reflection of the students and opportunities here at Wayne State, as well as a reflection of the mentoring from the faculty at Wayne also.”

The award will give Singh the chance to visit San Diego next year, where he will have the chance to interact with others that share his interest.

“It is amazing to see a medical student receive a grant in their first year,” said Will Robinson, a second-year med student. “I know Karan will go on to continue to do great things.”

“If I were to receive another grant, I would definitely do further nephrology research,” Singh said, “depending on the results of this study.”
