Looking for something different and inexpensive to do downtown? Try attending Art Detroit Now, an contemporary art exhibit featuring many proud pieces all made by local residents. The art show will also feature many exhibitions and demonstrations which includes over 75 galleries and museums not all located in Detroit.
The weekend’s events start Friday October 2nd to Saturday October 3rd. This is the second year for Art Detroit Now. Venues include downtown participants such as College for Creative Studies, Cranbrook, Detroit Artists Market, Detroit Institute of Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Oakland University Art Gallery, Russell Industrial Center, Wayne State University Art Galleries, G.R. N’Namdi Gallery.
"Art Detroit Now is an excellent opportunity for Detroit audiences to discover the vast and sophisticated network of art institutions available in our area. We are very proud to be a part of this two day celebration of the arts," said Luis Croquer, director at MOCAD.
The big highlight is the cultural crawl from 5 to 10pm on Friday night downtown. Fourteen venues will participate with different complementary performances at each venue. Downtown venues are the galleries at CCS and WSU, the DIA, MOCAD and Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
“MOCAD is happy to present the screening of ART21- Art in the 21st Century. We will follow the screening by a panel discussion lead by Rebecca Mazzei, Assistant Dean of College for Creative Studies. It will also feature many other artists from around the city,” states Jeseca Dawson, Deputy Director of Operations and Administration at MOCAD.
The DIA will showcase a new gallery installation called Fluxus: It’s an attitude, which comprises 132 objects donated by the Gilbert B. and Lila Silverman Fluxus Foundation. All of these venues are non-profits, which hopefully will attract more than 25,000 visitors.
“We are very excited to participate in the art crawl. It is an interesting way to get people involved in art at midtown. Our special exhibit is Landscape- A Modern Sequel. We really want people to participate in all the venues on the crawl. It should make for an exciting night and the best part is it’s free,” states Nancy Sizer, Director of Detroit Artists Market.
Saturday venues will include 50 galleries all over Metro-Detroit. Saturday from 1–6 pm, 50 galleries from Dearborn to Grosse Pointe, and Wyandotte to Rochester, will hold events, openings and special exhibitions. At 6 pm Cranbrook Art Museum, in its temporary location at the Cranbrook Institute of Science, will host an opening for Animal Logic: The Work of Richard Barnes. Part of its Artology: The Fusion of Art and Science at Cranbrook series, the exhibition features works from Barnes’ “Diorama”. “Diorama” includes photographs of traditional natural history museum displays that expose the artifice of these crafted environments. Admission to the opening is free and there will be a cash bar.
“Art Detroit Now is an ongoing effort to establish metro Detroit as major arts center,” said Marc Schwartz, chairperson.
