Bats, bats, and more bats, hanging high from the ceilings; a giant black widow spider nested on the wall at the museum entrance, draped in a wild web, crawling with tiny spiders and other creatures set the scene for a mysterious and very inviting evening for a thousand colorful costumed masqueraders.
The MOCAD was an ideal place for a Halloween dance party. The museum, a large open warehouse, with its high ceilings and wide open spaces, became an exciting venue of life imitating art in all forms.
Flashes of purple, blues, and red hues covered the walls along with the silhouettes of bats and variety of costumed characters dancing in the night. The music carried every beat for the dance-off of a thousand partygoers.
“It was a fantastic party, beyond my expectations,” said Peter Van Dyke, MOCAD New Wave Chair.
Van Dyke, an account supervisor at Berg Muirhead, a public relations firm in
New Wave, which was created over a year ago, consists of a dozen board members who come together to bring new and different audiences to the MOCAD.
The MOCAD Halloween Dance Party is the first ever, but the third largest event held at the museum.
“It was a lot of work and a huge group effort,” said Van Dyke.
There was a dance contest for the scariest, funniest, sexiest, and best political costume. There were a few Sarah Palins and an Abraham Lincoln that won in the costume contest.
The $5.00 cover charge was a worthwhile donation for the museum.
“We expected only 500 people at the door and by the end of the night there were a thousand who attended the dance party,” said Van Dyke.
There were costumes from every scary movie character. Wolfman, catwoman, gladiator, witches in tutus, fairies, pirates, bunnies, gold, silver, metallic and glitter, all dancing wildly on an exotic stage of weirdness and fun.
It was a howling and freakishly good night!
