About 10 hours of horror films were projected in the Student Center Building on Oct. 24 during the Wayne State Student Council and Student Center Administration’s first Scary Movie Marathon.

With the anticipation of Halloween building, Wayne State’s Student Council and the Student Center Administration held its first scary movie Marathon. The event took place Oct. 24 in North Commons, a high-traffic area in the Student Center.

It was an opportunity for students and faculty to watch a selection of scary movies. The movies included “Rodan,” “The Blob,” “Tremors,” “Gremlins,” “The Birds” and “The Haunting.”

Ajal Dave, Student Council Program Board representative, believed that the event was successful not just because of its movie selection, but because of its convenience as well.
“It’s put in a place where a lot of people could see a good movie selection and it’s a good way for people to eat lunch and watch a movie as well,” Dave said.

Many students thought the event was appropriate being just one week before one of the scariest celebrations of the year.

“Something like this is great for Halloween,” Arrielle Copeland said. “It’s different and it excites me about next week’s activities; I’m amped.”

Some students did not find the event as exciting. Being located in such a high-traffic area, it was noisy and crowded. Students ate lunch, conversed with friends and some studied. One student commented, “This movie is cheesy and old,” referring to “The Blob,” released in 1958.

There were many passersby like student Jon Rodgers, who ended up sticking around and watching one of the movies.

“This is a good idea, especially because of Halloween. There are a few people here, but I think there could be more,” Rodgers said.

Dave thought the same thing initially.

“This is a big event for this month and Student Council,” Dave said. “It will get students excited about our upcoming events.”

However, traffic eventually picked up.

The Student Council would consider making this an annual event, depending on the student reception, according to Dave.

Production design engineering technology major Gabrielle Faith believed that the marathon ultimately helped students meet and enjoy each others’ company.

“Events like this allow us [students] to come together and enjoy ourselves on campus,” Faith said. “We don’t have to watch the movie and we don’t even have to like the movie selection, but we do have the option. That is why this is great.”
