Illumination is the essence of the Indian festival of lights, Diwali. Ranging across various South Asian cultures, Diwali is celebrated for five consecutive days at the beginning of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. As the new moon falls on Oct. 30 this year, the festival begins on Oct. 28 and concludes on Nov. 1.
