Autumn is officially here and with the new fall fashions comes fresh interpretations on how to do makeup.
This year many of the top designers have illustrated gothic-inspired styles in their clothing and makeup artists have created looks to compliment these looks.
Wayne State fashion-student and graduate of Joe Blasco’s Makeup Academy in North Hollywood, Aléjandra Villegas, can sum up the best makeup trends from the fall collections in 6 words, “Electric eyes and light coloreds lips.”
It is not necessary or realistic, however, for students to go out and purchase the clothes from the runway, but anyone can capture the dramatic eyes present in many of this season’s shows.
Unlike high-fashion clothing, makeup is easily accessible to the average student and the looks present on the runway can be copied for real-world use. According to Villegas, the first step towards captivating beauty is ditching the summer’s makeup.
“Make sure you get your foundation re-matched for the changing season.”
One thing not to ditch is SPF, as it protects the skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays that can potentially cause skin caner and even more frightening: wrinkles. For the daring, the day can be all about artsy, colorful eyes.
Colored mascara or electric eye shadows can accentuate the deep autumn colors and luxurious textiles.
Though sparkles many times take a backseat to solid colors, this season they are on full display as shown by the new MAC cosmetics with their new Gold Fever collection.
Many makeup companies like Estée Lauder and Lanvin have selected purple as their principal color for the season.
“Plum colored blushes compliment almost all skin tones,” explained Villegas of the popular trend.
Some designers opted fore a more fresh-faced, polished look for their collections so as to add a sense of cool sophistication to the clothes. Makeup artists focused on having either nude lips with smoky eyes or daring lips with pale makeup.
The smoky eye is a timeless technique but makeup artist Pat McGrath reinterpreted it using colorful eye shadow for a look that is both ethereal and sultry.
The most important thing for all to remember when getting glamorous either in the morning or for some event.
“There is no such thing as an undesirable skin tone," McGrath said. "There is no need to try and be, or look like someone else; makeup is just to express who you are.”
